Team GB surpassed its unofficial Olympic medal target to secure the second highest medal tally on foreign soil with an impressive haul of 65, the same as London 2012, with 22 golds, 21 silvers and 22 bronze medals. It was only in Rio 2016 when Team GB secured more with 67 medals, 27 of them gold, to finish in second place in the medal table behind the USA and ahead of China.

With the Paralympics opening ceremony taking place at 8pm in Tokyo today, 12pm GMT, about 4,400 athletes are expected to attend the games from 160 countries competing in 22 sports. The Paralympics GB squad makes up 228 of those and has a target of 100 to 140 medals. In Rio 2016 the athletes had a huge success of securing 147 medals including 64 golds, only second to China.

Everyone wishes all the athletes representing Paralympics GB the best of luck.
