Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, is the one day a year where it is perfectly acceptable to throw food around the kitchen and eat dessert for dinner.

It is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent is traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Christians go to confession and are 'shriven' (absolved from their sins). A bell is rung to call people to confession and it has been nicknamed the 'Pancake Bell'.

Shrove Tuesday is the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the fast for Lent so pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

Pancake Day always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. This year, it falls on 13th February.

So whether you go for sweet or savoury, enjoy the treat and try not to create too much mess!
